Pub attempts record-breaking penny drive to support breast cancer charity

(TECUMSEH, ONTARIO, MONDAY MAY 31, 2010) – A Tecumseh pub will attempt to break a global record for the world’s longest line of pennies and then donate all the proceeds to help find a cure for breast cancer.

Beginning tomorrow, The Spitfire and Firkin is asking community members to donate their one cent coins in its attempt to raise $36,000 or 3.6 million pennies, said co-owner Kyle McDonald.

“That might sound astronomical,” he said, “but most people have penny jars at home and if we can just get three thousand people to donate $12 in pennies, we’ll reach our target, put Tecumseh in the Guinness Book of World Records and help out with a really important cause.”

Once collected, McDonald said organizers will line up the pennies in the parking lot of the Tecumseh Road eatery and beat the record for the Longest Line of Coins, a mark currently held by the town of Fort Scott, Kansas. In 2008, organizers there collected $34,000 and completed a line of pennies that measured 64.88 km, or 40.32 miles.

All proceeds will go to the International Dragon Boats for the Cure, an annual event which has raised more than $1.3 million for local hospitals, cancer centres and foundations over the last seven years. This year’s event will take place July 9-11 at Waterfront Park in Tecumseh.

McDonald said the attempt to break the record has already been registered with Guinness World Records. Everyone who makes a donation will have their name on a plaque to be hung in the pub beside the certificate from Guinness.

“This may be one of the last opportunities Canada has to set this record,” McDonald said. “The Canadian Senate is currently debating to remove the penny as currency.”

Pennies can be dropped off at the pub at 11828 Tecumseh Rd. E.
